Jargon 101: Marketing Buzzwords You Need to Know

How are you tracking your conversions? Are you using search engine optimization? Have you tried native advertising?

These are all questions that you may face when speaking to a marketer about your complete marketing strategy. However, you can’t really give an informed answer when you’re not exactly sure what these terms mean, right?

Unfortunately, marketing can be complex and intimidating at first glance. With hundreds of acronyms and a lot of confusing jargon, it’s easy to feel lost-in-translation. So to help you navigate the world of marketing and create an effective marketing campaign for your business, here are five marketing buzzwords you need to know.

5 Marketing Buzzwords

1.) SEO

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a major marketing buzzword that is impossible to escape nowadays. That’s because SEO is influential in getting your company website seen by your target audience through the process of optimizing your web pages.

In your area, there are probably many companies that sell a product or service like yours. So when a potential customer searches for that product or service via a search engine like Google, Bing or Yahoo, you want your business name to show in the results. SEO helps make that happen.

2.) Keywords

Since you now know a little more about SEO, it is only right that you‘re introduced to an integral piece of the SEO process… keywords.

Keywords are the topics or phrases that webpages use to get indexed in the search results by the search engines.

As a business owner, it is important that you are knowledgeable of the keywords your customers use to find your product or service online. For instance, if you operate a senior living facility, chances are your prospects will search for the keyword phrase “senior living” or “retirement community” to find relevant businesses. Because of this, it is vital that you place these keywords within your website content, social media posts, and digital ads.

No matter the type of marketing or advertising you use for your business, the keywords you choose will play a major part in making them effective.

3.) Drip Email Marketing

Simply put, drip email marketing uses automated emails to create a campaign that markets your product or service to your current customers or prospects. But, to get a better idea of how drip emails work, you’ll need to think more vividly. For instance, let’s say you have a leaky water hose that drips water. Over time, these little drips will soon form a large puddle and prompt you to take action. That is exactly how drip email marketing works. As you “drip” emails to your customers, these messages will form a collective campaign that compels them to buy your product or service.

When creating a drip email campaign, it is important that the email content is relevant and consistent to make the biggest impact.

4.) Native Advertising

One of the newest and hottest methods in the industry is native advertising.

Native advertising allows you to have your content cleverly distributed in a way that doesn’t look like a traditional ad. A real-life example of a native ad is Baylor Scott & Health.  Baylor was able to embed their content in the Arts & Life section of dallasnews.com by adapting it to look more like an editorial piece.

The concept of native advertising is a smart way to do digital marketing while still providing a great customer experience.

5.) Conversion

When deploying a marketing campaign, the goal is to have people complete an action when viewing or interacting with your marketing collaterals. This act is a conversion.

For example, if you send a drip email and a person clicks the link within the email, that’s a conversion. If someone lands on your site and fills out a form to request more information, that too is a conversion.

By tracking your conversions, you are able to gauge the success of that marketing piece and make any necessary changes.

The next time you hear these five marketing buzzwords, hopefully you will feel more confident by not having to constantly ask “What does that even mean?
