The Dallas Morning News and local NBC affiliate KXAS-TV (Channel 5) have formed a partnership to share content and services.

The one-year agreement replaces a similar deal with ABC affiliate WFAA-TV (Channel 8), which expires at the end of the year, said The News publisher and chief executive Jim Moroney. The company talked with the local CBS affiliate, NBC affiliate and WFAA before making its decision, he said.

The News and Channel 5 said they will join together on content such as weather, politics and breaking news in the newspaper, on newscasts and both organizations’ websites — and potentially other platforms. Brian Hocker, vice president of programming for Channel 5, said the two organizations are finalizing the details.

For example, The News will be able to stream KXAS’ helicopter footage, and both organizations will have access to published content on each other’s websites, with credit on all digital content given to the original site, Moroney said.

“The spirit of the deal is to be as creative as we can be,” he said. “We need to explore with a television partner what we both can do together to benefit both companies and benefit the audiences that are coming to us for news and information.”

Readers and viewers will begin to see the first efforts of the partnership after Jan. 1.
